This weeks episode of the TBS news introduces a new layer to the offering.

When Kim Krause  of the Schreiber Media Centre approached the Schreiber Public Library with the idea of having a video version of each weeks local newspaper produced, a few concerns had to be addressed. They could only proceed with the blessing of the editor in charge of the newspaper. In order to not interfere with the already fragile list of subscribers it was decided that the initial releases would be available only to those subscribers as a value added incentive to customers.

A new addition was added to this weeks edition. The library has long held rights of use of the archives of the newspaper going back many decades and this latest release features a story from this date in 1993. All past editions of the TBS news have been bound and stored at the library as part of its extensive archive of historical records. This week David Costa dusted off the March 30th issue and picked a front page article featuring a story about hydro under billing the local public school in Terrace Bay for three years. It was also interesting to note that at that time the newspaper contained over 24 pages. Nearly thirty years later that number has dwindled significantly but the paper still marches on despite the reduction in content.

Local community newspapers have been a reflection of what is going on in most rural areas and the current state of the press certainly backs up this fact. Even Schreiber Media Centre continues to struggle to produce the sufficient content required by the Local Journalism Initiative, whose intent is to provide funding for a local journalist to cover events in so called areas suffering news poverty. A tough role that makes for some creative out of the box thinking. It is hoped that by teaming up with the local weekly that both parties can benefit and continue to support the communities in which they are engaging local residents and providing content that serves the people of this area.
