Schreiber Senior Centre Spring Fling
The Schreiber Senior Centre is back in action and to kick of the season they celebrated with a Spring Fling event.
The function was held at the Schreiber Recreation Complex and featured a display of all the handworks of the Sewing Club at the entrance. Senior Programme director Cathy Carlino and Terry Thompson greeted people at the door as they started to arrive. Eythe Howard was brought in to talk about the Swedish Weaving project and how it has gone from humble beginnings to its current group. Terry also highlighted the new chairs and tables that the senior centre was able to purchase thanks to various grants. The original tables and chairs at the recreation complex have been removed and the new ones now dress the hall in the centre.
One of the most anticipated programs of the Senior Centre is the Summer Barbeque, an event meant to remind people that the afternoon barbecues will once again be going ahead every Thursday afternoon.
Another feature of this spring fling was the introduction of “Elephant Ears”. Cathy came up with the idea to add an extra bit of variety to the afternoon menu. The “ears”, sometimes called beaver tails, are really donut dough rolled flat and cooked in hot oil. Sprinkled with icing sugar they were a great treat that might just become the next big item at future events.
Outside, in the back of the rec centre, the crew was hard at work making hamburgers and hot dogs. It was like an assembly line as the master chefs toiled over the hot grill. Deputy Mayor Dan McGrath praised the volunteers and the work that the senior centre does for the entire community and was very pleased with the high turnout. All the food was not only made by volunteers but there was no cost to attendees as most were members of the Schreiber Senior Centre, currently with a membership of over 30% of the entire town of Schreiber.
It is hoped that this “spring” event will signal the official start of summer activities in the township of Schreiber. A great time was had by all.
