“Sewing the Climate” fashion show celebrates unity, cultural diversity and style

REGENT PARK, TORONTO – The Regent Park Sewing Studio presented the “Sewing the Climate” fashion show September 14th, where members of the sewing collective came together to showcase their designs made from recycled materials and donations in a celebration of unity, cultural diversity and style at Ada Slaight Hall, Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas Street East.
The show featured 18 models, both male and female residents and friends of Regent Park. They all wore tasteful garments in wonderful colors and fabrics using handmade recycled items.
“This event is brought to the community to show the work that students made step by step during the sewing classes and what can they do now after completing the program,” said the event coordinator. “The goal of this program is put the community together, learn together, and empower them with the sewing skills needed for them to find a job or work for themselves.”
A member of the Regent Park community and one of the models at the fashion show said, “We have been waiting so long for this day. (The) team worked so hard for this event to be successful since last year. During the pandemic it was difficult for them to have the class, but finally when everything was eased and we were able to teach the students, the young people and adults – they feel very proud of learning how to sew.”
The Regent Park Sewing Studio is a collective of men and women of all ages and cultural backgrounds who come together to create sewing projects. From threading a needle, to intricate sewing techniques, to operating a machine, the Studio allows participants to learn from one another.
The group gathers every Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the TD Centre of Learning, 540 Dundas Street East.
Production of the “Sewing the Climate” fashion show was supported by Tridel Corporation, United Way, Artscape, TCHC, TD Center of Learning, Regent Park Sewing Studio, and Mothers of Peace.
