Pro-Palestinian students walk out in support of Palestine
Montreal university students gathered to walk out in support of Palestinian solidarity. Students from Concordia University, McGill University and L'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) walked out of class for Palestine.
Protesters at Concordia walked out and began marching on Bishop street and headed along Sherboorke street towards McGill. During the walk, protesters shouted chantings including, "Every land is the holy land, every people is the promised people" and "There is only one solution: Intifada revolution."
When Concordia activists arrived at McGill, they met with the McGill contingent at Roddick gates outside McGill campus. After the two groups converged, they started chanting, "Israel terroriste, McGill complice."
Soldiarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) McGill has had monthly protests and walk outs in support of Palestine. In November, the Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) voted to adopt a "policy against genocide in Palestine" that was approved in a referendum by 78.7 per cent, which was supported by 5,974 students at McGill.
A week later, the Quebec Superior Court issued a safeguard order, prohibiting the SSMU from upholding the vote until the court can hear arguments from the SSMU and an anonymous McGill student, represented by a lawyer working for Jewish advocacy group B'nai Brith Canada. B'nai Brith Canada filed an injunction on behalf of this student to stop the vote from being upheld. Both sides will be heard in Quebec Superior Court on March 25, 2024.
At the time, SPHR McGill said, this sets a "dangerous precedent for student democracy and undermines the supposedly democratic structure of Canadian institutions" in a statement to CBC News. SPHR has brought up this case multiple times at their protests, deeming it as a method to silence pro-Palestine advocacy.
Protesters chanted at the doors of McGill, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."
After protesting outside McGill, activists then marched towards UQAM, meeting with the UQAM contingent, then protesting inside of UQAM.
