June is Indigenous History Month and there are a number of ways Region 7 Metis citizens can participate in culture and celebrate Metis history.

May 31 to June 2 is the Barrie South Simcoe Metis Council’s annual youth camp. Metis citizens in the Barrie South Simcoe catchment area will come together to celebrate Metis culture at Baywood Wildwood Resort in Severn Bridge. This event will host 100 youth along with their families to participate in cultural activities, connect to the land and even take part in a media training workshop with Simcoe Community Media.

To kick off Indigenous History Month, the City of Barrie in partnership with Mamaway Wiidodaawon, will be hosting a flag raising ceremony June 2nd at 11 am at Barrie City Hall. Both Indigenous and non-Indigenous citizens are invited to attend the event to start of Indigenous History Month in a good way.

For our Metis friends in Saskatoon, the inaugural Acimowin Film Festival will be taking place from June 5 to 8. This is the first Indigenous Film Festival to take place in Saskatchewan since 2016. A Metis Toy Story will be playing during June 6th at the event, a film produced in support by the Barrie South Simcoe Metis Council.

The Metis and Energy Knowledge symposium will take place this month June 21 and 22 in Blue Mountain. This two day event will allow citizens of Region 7 to connect with Metis knowledge holders and learn Metis history on Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21. The following day, citizens will be able to engage with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to learn more about nuclear energy and the Deep Geological Repository, which could potentially be placed in the region.

Barrie South Simcoe Metis youth are invited to a Fishing Day Event on June 23 hosted by the Barrie Rotary Club. Youth will be given fishing gear and spend the day learning to fish and connect with the water. To learn more contact the BSSMC or the Barrie Rotary Club.
