Halifax Celebrates African Heritage Month: Honoring Legacy and Inclusion
Halifax officially launched African Heritage Month 2025 on January 22 at the Central Library’s Paul O’Regan Hall. The 41st annual celebration embraced the theme Legacy in Action: Celebrating Black Brilliance, highlighting the resilience and contributions of African Nova Scotians. The evening opened with a powerful performance by Drummers from Home and a moving rendition of Lift Every Voice by award-winning singer Cyndi Cain.
Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard delivered inspiring remarks, urging continued progress in equity and inclusion. Mayor Andy Fillmore read the proclamation, acknowledging the pivotal role of African Nova Scotians in shaping the province. Musical performances by the Rhythm of Africa band brought energy and cultural vibrancy to the event. Organized by the Black History Month Association, the evening celebrated history, unity, and the enduring legacy of Black excellence.
