Darts for a Cause
The recent fire on Mill Street which put 10 people out of a home, most of whom were recent arrivals in Canada, has prompted support from all corners of the community. The first of what will be many fundraisers was held by the recently formed Neepawa Darts Group, who organised an impromptu tournament to raise funds and other donations for the victims of the fire. All proceeds from registration fees will be given to the families alongside any material donations received.
The tournament organiser shared his connection with one of the men who lost their home, who was his “batchmate” at HyLife - that is, they arrived in the country around the same time and were in the same training group at the pork processing plant. He indicated the man was supporting five kids back in the Philippines, who had not yet come to Canada to join him, and that many of the other residents had similar stories.
The tournament also served as an introduction to the sport for young people, and they encouraged anyone in the community of all ages to come join them this winter. While the tournament was just one day, culminating with a group meal, they will be organising many more events in the community.
Alongside the registration fees, the group put out a donation box especially for people who are not dart players and were looking for donations of things such as clothing and non-perishable food items for the affected families.
While the building and all of its contents were lost, no one was harmed in the fire.
