In the heart of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, a small but proud community has found a unique way to honour its athletic heritage while fostering a spirit of unity and inspiration.

Since 2017, the Greater St. Stephen Sports Wall of Fame, housed in the Garcelon Civic Centre, has celebrated the achievements of athletes, coaches, and teams who have made a lasting impact on the town’s sports culture.

What began as a simple idea inspired by a similar project in Sackville has blossomed into a cherished tradition. The driving force behind the initiative was Joe Peters, a visionary whose passion for his community laid the foundation for the Sports Wall of Fame.

"Joe was our founder," said Don Walker, a key figure in the project. "If we have to name one person who brought this concept to life, it would be Joe. His vision created a lasting impact on our community."

The journey began with the wall’s first induction in the spring of 2017. Jamie Waycott, another instrumental member of the initiative, remembers the pivotal moment when Joe Peters approached him.

"Joe came up to me at a hockey game in late 2016 and shared the idea. It was a great one," Waycott recalled. "We had just retired, and this felt like the perfect way to give back to the community." A dedicated committee quickly formed, and the project gained momentum.

Each year, the Wall of Fame grows, inducting individuals and teams in three categories: builders, athletes, and teams. The annual induction ceremony draws hundreds of attendees, a testament to the town’s pride in its sports legacy.

"That evening has such a strong Saint Stephen feel," Waycott said. "It’s about our community, our facility, and where we’ve been."

The wall not only celebrates athletic accomplishments but also shines a light on the contributions of coaches and mentors. Walker, himself honoured on the wall for his coaching achievements, spoke to the profound significance of such recognition.

"To be on that wall with so many great coaches, leaders, athletes, and teams was humbling. It was a very proud moment," he said. The wall stands as a source of inspiration for future generations, encouraging them to pursue not only athletic excellence but also leadership roles within their community.

Building on this spirit of legacy and leadership, the Wall of Fame committee launched the Joe Peters Greater St. Stephen Sports Wall of Fame Scholarship. This annual award supports young athletes while honouring Joe Peters’ commitment to fostering leadership and community through sport.

Looking ahead, the committee is exploring ways to ensure the wall remains a dynamic and engaging experience for visitors. Ideas include incorporating interactive technology to preserve and share the stories behind the names on the wall.

"A seed was planted with that conversation," Walker noted. "It might take someone to spearhead it, but evolving the wall is important because as years go by, things can get forgotten."
