Multicultural Day Celebrates Breadth of Local Cultures
Neepawa is leaning hard into its summer of festivals with a brand-new celebration — the very first Multicultural Day. This colourful gathering features cultural presentations and performances from community members representing China, El Salvador, Mexico, Ukraine, and more. While Neepawa’s large Filipino population is often in the spotlight, this event makes space for an even wider variety of voices and traditions.
NACTV’s John Drinkwater chats with locals about their journeys to Neepawa and the joy of sharing their heritage with neighbours. He also speaks with event organizer Ilce Pineda, who represents El Salvador, about why she felt this celebration was needed and why recognizing the community’s diversity must go hand in hand with ensuring appropriate services for everyone.
In this week’s local business spotlight, we pull up a chair at Brews Brothers Bistro — a homegrown restaurant known for teaming up with local artists and organizations. Recently, they’ve started hosting a weekly board games night, filling a need for more public spaces where people can gather in the evenings. These spotlights shine a light on small businesses that weave themselves into the very fabric of the community.
History gets a playful twist at the Beautiful Plains Museum this month with a “Night at the Museum” series inspired by the 2006 film. Volunteers will don period costumes, young visitors can explore the museum in the dark, and a scavenger hunt will keep things lively. It’s an imaginative way to spark interest in local history.
And over at Neepawa’s Day Camp, entrepreneurship week took young participants from idea to execution. They learned what it takes to start a business, then tested their skills at a one-day market, selling their creations. The reward for all that hard work? The group raised enough to fund a fun-filled day at the water park.
