Exploring The Nature Trails Of Ministers Island: A Hidden Gem In Southwest New Brunswick

Nestled in the Maritimes, Ministers Island boasts not only breathtaking historical structures but also an extensive network of nature trails that offer a unique and unforgettable experience. With over 20 kilometers of walking trails, this island is a haven for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

According to Andrew Cook, the Executive Director of Ministers Island, the trails on the island were originally carriage trails, designed for Sir William Van Horn's horse-drawn carriages. These trails have now been transformed into scenic walking paths that wind their way through dense forests and meadows. Cook describes them as "fairly easy walking trails," suitable for visitors of all ages and fitness levels.

One of the highlights of the trail system is the perimeter trail that encircles the entire island, spanning approximately seven kilometers. Cook explains that this trail offers stunning views and takes visitors on a journey around the island's coastline. For the more adventurous, he suggests walking along the beach during low tide, adding an extra 10 kilometers to the journey. However, he advises caution in some challenging areas.

Cook emphasizes the island's commitment to preserving its natural beauty. Fallen trees are left undisturbed, creating their own ecosystem over time. The meadows, once cleared for farming, have been kept intact to provide a contrast to the dense forests. Visitors can witness the beauty of these preserved meadows and their unique flora and fauna.

The island also offers some more challenging trails, such as the Boardwalk Trail, featuring boardwalks to navigate through marshy areas. Cook highlights the slipperiness of this trail on wet days but emphasizes the opportunity to explore a different side of the island's diverse landscapes.

With its membership system, Ministers Island welcomes visitors to explore its trails at their leisure. For a nominal fee, individuals and families can have unlimited access to the island, provided they visit during low tide. The island also provides picnic tables and Adirondack chairs at various spots along the trails, allowing visitors to relax and take in the breathtaking views.
