This figure represents one of the strongest tourism turnouts in recent memory. Guests travelled from far and wide—spanning 27 countries and 41 U.S. states—demonstrating the reach and growing reputation of the local attraction.

Spadoni added that the EDO office is actively working on several proposals with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and is already coordinating long-term planning efforts with the Township of Terrace Bay for 2026. These joint initiatives are expected to focus on tourism promotion, regional marketing, and shared infrastructure investments. The EDO also reported a growing sense of local engagement, noting the formal appointment of resident Bob Bryson as a new member of the Community Economic Development Committee. His addition was described as a welcome step toward strengthening volunteer participation and community input in local decision-making.

Operationally, Schreiber is in the process of transitioning into winter mode. The splash pad has been closed for the season, and crews have begun winterizing the baseball field to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. However, as preparations for winter advance, another seasonal issue has emerged—bears.

Council discussed an unusual increase in bear activity across Schreiber and other northern municipalities this year. Many officials and residents have attributed the uptick to a poor berry season, which has forced bears to search for alternative food sources closer to populated areas. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has updated its regulations, now requiring a license for bear trapping. In response, council reminded residents to report all nuisance bear encounters directly to the provincial “Bear Wise” program. Officials emphasized that these reports help ensure the town’s bear issues are formally logged and addressed through the proper channels.

Attention then turned to infrastructure compliance. A recent inspection report of Schreiber’s Wastewater Treatment Plant identified six non-compliance findings. Most of these were tied to the prior operational practice of running only one clarifier rather than the full system. The report recommended corrective measures to improve efficiency and meet provincial standards. Council was advised that if the town’s pending grant application for a new treatment facility is unsuccessful, the municipality will need to include the necessary upgrades in its next capital budget to avoid further penalties.

In an effort to reduce expenses and better manage staff hours, council voted to close the arena on Sundays for public skating and shinny sessions. The Fire Department also made the agenda, with plans to strengthen its operational capacity. Council endorsed the department’s intent to apply for a second Fire Protection Grant aimed at acquiring new equipment and essential safety supplies. Officials said the funding, if approved, would further enhance local emergency response capabilities.

As the meeting drew to a close, council approved overtime pay for recreation staff scheduled to raise the Truth and Reconciliation flag on Monday, September 30—the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The flag-raising ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. outside the Municipal Complex, serving as a gesture of respect and reflection for the community.

What started as an idea to engage youth in creative skill-building and local journalism turned into an eight-week journey for 15 young participants, thanks to a collaboration between NACTV, the Neepawa Settlement’s SWIS program, and a grant from the Beautiful Plains Community Foundation. The pilot youth training program provided not only technical skills but also a voice and platform for participants to share their perspectives.

For many, it was their first experience behind a camera or editing footage. They learned to craft stories, conduct interviews, and write like journalists. Sessions were led by mentors: NACTV staff shared expertise in video production, Don Walmsley guided students in interviewing, and writers from the Neepawa Banner introduced the basics of article writing.

Support from the community made the program possible. The Beautiful Plains Community Foundation funded cameras, microphones, and facilitator honoraria. The Neepawa Settlement provided a welcoming space, snacks, and encouragement to ensure every participant felt supported.

By the end, 12 of the 15 youth completed the program. Many asked if it would return next year and expressed interest in volunteering with NACTV in the meantime.

The program not only taught media skills but also empowered youth to share their own stories. The Neepawa community can be proud of this achievement and excited about what’s possible when we continue investing in local youth.

The 2025 Schreiber Senior Centre Fair continued its series of workshops and presentations aimed at keeping seniors informed and prepared. While the first part of the event focused on home safety, the second part shifted attention to financial and estate planning.

The next presenter at the Annual Seniors Fair was Cody Atkinson, a wealth management professional from Investors Group. Cody delivered an engaging and informative talk to a group of seniors on the vital, yet often overlooked, topic of estate planning. His central message was clear: without proper planning, the government (CRA) could quickly become the primary beneficiary of one’s estate. His ultimate goal was to help seniors minimize taxes and ensure their wealth passed to the people they cared about most.

Cody encouraged audience participation, inviting questions at any time, and guided attendees through common pitfalls using vivid examples. He highlighted challenges for blended families, where a lack of planning can unintentionally exclude children from a former marriage, as accounts and beneficiary designations often roll directly to a new spouse. He emphasized the importance of regularly reviewing Wills and beneficiary forms to avoid complications.

A significant portion of the presentation focused on dividing physical assets, such as a family camp. Cody explained that property with large capital gains could trigger an unexpected and substantial tax bill that the estate might not have the cash to cover, potentially forcing a sale or mortgage. He suggested permanent life insurance as a cost-effective solution to cover these tax liabilities or to equalize the estate among heirs.

Finally, Cody covered essential legal tools, including the creation of a professional Will to designate an Executor and Guardian, and the critical use of Powers of Attorney for both property and health matters. He also cautioned against selecting an Executor or Power of Attorney who lives out of province, noting the complex legal requirements and potential bond fees that could arise.

Through practical advice, real-world examples, and an interactive approach, Cody’s presentation provided seniors with the knowledge and tools they need to protect their assets and ensure their wishes are carried out.

Earlier this year, the Schreiber Senior Centre hosted its annual Seniors Active Living Fair, and the event was once again a resounding success. Despite chilly weather outside, more than 130 people turned out to take part, alongside 17 exhibitors offering resources, demonstrations, and information.

Terry Thompson, chair of the Senior Centre, said she was thrilled with the turnout and emphasized how valuable the fair has become for local seniors. “It’s not just about the information people take home,” she explained. “It’s about the sense of connection and community that comes from being together.”

The fair featured three main presentations, each aimed at providing practical tools to help seniors live healthier, safer, and more fulfilling lives. The afternoon began with a presentation from the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) on fall prevention. Francis Puchalski, representing the organization, outlined simple but effective steps older adults can take to reduce their risk of falls. These included balance and strength-building exercises, safe movement practices, and small but important adjustments in the home environment.

The talk clearly struck a chord with the audience. One attendee commented afterward, “I never really thought about how a simple rug could be a tripping hazard. It’s a small thing, but it makes a huge difference.” The presentation reinforced the critical role of education in maintaining independence and highlighted how prevention strategies can help seniors feel more confident in their daily lives.

Beyond fall prevention, exhibitors provided advice on nutrition, fitness, social programming, and other aspects of healthy aging. While Programme Coordinator Cathy Carlino was unable to attend this year due to health issues, her efforts were widely acknowledged. Colleagues and participants alike noted that her energy and dedication were still very much felt throughout the event. Carlino continues to work tirelessly for the seniors of Schreiber and is determined to make a full and speedy recovery.

Ultimately, the day stood as more than just an information session—it was a celebration of active living and community resilience. The Schreiber Senior Centre’s annual fair has grown into an event that empowers seniors with knowledge, tools, and friendships, ensuring they can continue living healthy, independent lives well into the future.

Lake Superior High School marked a milestone on graduation day, celebrating the achievements of its Class of 2025 in a ceremony that blended pride, reflection, and hope for the future. The event, recorded and live-streamed so family and friends near and far could take part, honoured four years of remarkable student perseverance and growth.

Speakers highlighted the extraordinary challenges this group faced, beginning their high school journey during a global pandemic that reshaped classrooms and disrupted routines. Principal Sarah Curtis and Director of Education Will Goodman both commended the graduates for adapting with resilience, finding new ways to learn, and emerging as leaders in their school and community. They praised the class not only for their academic success but also for their ability to support one another through uncertain times, becoming artists, athletes, volunteers, and role models along the way.

The evening also recognized individual excellence through an array of bursaries and awards contributed by local organizations, businesses, and community partners. The ceremony concluded with memorable addresses from co-valedictorians Brady Nesbitt and Zoe Krause.
