Local Journalism Initiative Impact

On June 19, 2024, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs, announced that the Government of Canada has listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code, effective today.

We discussed this matter with social and political activists because this topic has always been a point of discussion in the Iranian community, and the Canadian government had avoided giving a clear response to this community for years.

Working with the Marine Research Centre at the Petit de Grat campus of Universite Sainte-Anne, particularly Director Michelle Theriault, Telile TV was able to detail the renovations at the facility, demonstrate some of the tests they conducted and explain the reasons for the tests. We also did a brief overview of what occurs at the centre daily and what they contribute to the local fishing and aquaculture industries.

The recent broadcast of a report on the prevention of drunk driving by TVC22 provoked a significant reaction among the population.

A citizen contacted our editorial staff to express her appreciation of the show. She pointed out that at one time, announcements and awareness campaigns against driving under the influence of alcohol were more common. “With the legalization of marijuana and the addition of alcohol into the equation, people are not always, especially on rural back roads responsible,” she said.

Une vingtaine de personnes se sont rassemblées devant le consulat chinois au centre-ville de Montréal pour appeler à l'action en faveur de la libération des Ouïghours dans la région autonome du nord-ouest de la Chine, Xingjiang. Les Ouïghours sont un groupe d'origine turque résidant depuis des siècles au Turkestan oriental, colonisé par la Chine en 1949, aujourd'hui connu sous le nom de Xinjiang.

PORT ROYAL - Une histoire qui changeait chaque jour - et dans certains cas, chaque heure - fin février, a montré le lien puissant entre les résidents de l'Isle Madame et la télévision communautaire Telile. La décision du ministère des Travaux publics de la Nouvelle-Écosse de supprimer le pont de Port Royal, un lien de transport de longue date pour plusieurs communautés de l'ouest de l'Isle Madame, a suscité la colère de plusieurs résidents locaux.

Pour moi, en tant que journaliste civique, il est important de faire une différence dans la vie des nouveaux arrivants ukrainiens. Alors que la guerre dans leur pays a déplacé des milliers de personnes, le Manitoba a déjà accueilli plus de 20 000 Ukrainiens depuis le début de la guerre et s'attend à en accueillir 7 000 d'ici la fin mars.

The local journalism of ClicPortneuf.tv has made a difference for users of the ZEC Batiscan-Neilson as well as all people involved in the issue of ZEC pricing in Quebec.

The authorities concerned had great difficulty making themselves heard by the users of the Zec Batiscan-Neilson who did not want pricing for the use of the territory. They wanted the status quo, but the government's Bill 19 required annual pricing.

Canada unveiled the Special measures for extended family in Gaza on January 9, 2024. Through this temporary resident visa program, Gazans with family members who are either Canadian citizens or permanent residents can apply to come to Canada for up to three years. Not one applicant has been brought from Gaza to Canada under this program, prompting outrage from Canadians with family members in Gaza who are worried for the safety of their families.

Citizens of the Charlevoix region have called out Groupe le Massif on the lack of social acceptability of its development projects. As community media, TVCO helped give them a voice. Since then, there has been radio silence on the mountain side.

We would like to submit the "Moss Park Photostory" as one of our impact stories covered LJI jounalist Fred Alvarado in his weekly news. It is a story that illustrates community involvement at multiple levels, and it illustrates the importance of having a local journalist to cover the event.

The escalating problem of addiction in Vancouver is impacting a wide range of communities, leading to significant distress for families as they witness their youth falling victim to drugs. Schools are also grappling with challenges, as students are increasingly encountering drug offers on campus. Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort involving community interventions, educational programs, and collaboration with local authorities.

Our interview with Honey Khadem, the Houdini FX Lead, delving into the topic of cyberbullying, resonated profoundly with our audience. The response was particularly robust on our Facebook page. The conversation shed light on the importance of vigilance and intelligence in navigating social media platforms.

For me, as a civic journalist it is important to make a difference in the lives of newcomers from Ukraine. As the war in their homeland displaced thousands, Manitoba has already welcomed more than 20,000 Ukrainians since the start of the war, it is expecting to welcome 7,000 people by the end of March.

PORT ROYAL - A story that kept changing every day - and in some cases, every hour - in late February showed the powerful connection between Isle Madame residents and Telile Community Television. 

A decision by Nova Scotia's Department of Public Works (DPW) to remove the Port Royal Bridge, a longtime transportation link for multiple communities in western Isle Madame, resulted in an angry response for several local residents. In less than a week, over 200 people had joined a Facebook group calling for preserving the bridge, which had been inactive since 2017. 

A couple dozen people gathered outside of the Chinese consulate in Downtown Montreal to call to action the liberation of Uyghurs in China's northwestern autonomous region Xingjiang. Uyghurs are a turkic-ethnic group with centuries of residing in East Turkestan, which was colonized by China in 1949, now known as Xinjiang.

The story about how the New Westminster Library makes in demand technology accessible to the public caused the most feedback from the public. Most people didn't realize that the library provides locals with learning opportunities about new and emerging technology.

Un des grands enjeux dans la MRC de Portneuf est le milieu scolaire. Chaque ville ou municipalités a de grands enjeux dans l’éducation pour les jeunes et la rétention de ceux-ci sur notre territoire. Un de ces enjeux qui fait beaucoup parler ces derniers temps et pour lequel nous avons été le premier média d’information à sortir la nouvelle est la réponse négative du gouvernement face aux demandes d’une nouvelle école secondaire à Pont-Rouge.

The LJI program will have a lasting impact for years to come. The goal of the program is to address news poverty in areas not in the spotlight. Beauval (Treaty Ten area) has no major media regularly covering events or stories. The program has allowed CIPI Radio to build a library of lasting content. The program has showed other organizations the value in creating content that reflects their community. We give a voice to the people, often in their native language.

As Schreiber Media Centre enters it’s last quarter of what has been a rather interesting period to say the least, it seems like a good time to reflect on what exactly we have achieved. From the beginning, it was clear there just wasn’t enough happening in the small community of Schreiber to justify the hiring of a full time journalist. However it seemed important enough to establish some kind of media presence in the town. The idea of having a person dedicated to covering the events and stories of Schreiber would ultimately be worthwhile.

Heather Whittaker woke up early one morning last September to find that her basement apartment in Saint John, N.B. had flooded due to a broken pipe. 

It was the latest in a series of setbacks for Whittaker, who struggles to make ends meet on social assistance while serving as the sole caregiver for her teenage son Justice, who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy.
