Barrie’s new mayor Alex Nuttall and council sworn in

On Wednesday, the new mayor and council were sworn in by Justice of the Peace Brian O. Norton. Following are the council members for Barrie’s ten wards. Clare Riepma as Ward 1 Councillor, Craig Nixon as Ward 2 Councillor, Ann-Marie Kungl as Ward 3 Councillor, Amy Courser as Ward 4 Councillor, Robert Thomson as Ward 5 Councillor, Nigussie Nigussie as Ward 6 Councillor, Gary Harvey as Ward 7 Councillor, Jim Harris as Ward 8 Councillor, Sergio Morales as Ward 9 Councillor and Bryn Hamilton as Ward 10 Councillor.

In his inaugural address, Mayor Alex Nuttall talked about why Barrie is a special place. The current council has the highest female and people of color members. He also talked about some members of the council coming from extreme poverty and succeeding. “Numerous members of council have lived in government housing, experienced extreme poverty and overcome it. These are positive steps towards having a council that reflects the people that it serves,” he said.

He painted a grim financial future for the city. However he announced increased investment in policing. “We will be able to provide a full complement of police officers for the first time in years.”

According to Stat Canada, Barrie has one of the lowest crime rates in the county while highest overdose rate. Nuttall did not talk about his plans to address the drug crisis.

“Let's take on these economic headwinds, budget constraints, core issues for as long as we are rowing together from the north side of Lake Simcoe and Kempenfelt Bay to the south,” he concluded.
