First council meeting of new Terrace Bay council

The newly elected Terrace Bay council met for the first time this week. Mayor Paul Malashewski, previously on council, and newly elected councillors Chris Dube and Gary Adduono were joined by returning councillors Bert Johnson and Rick St. Louis.

  1. First up was the adoption of the minutes from the previous meeting.
  2. The Administrators report started with an explanation by CAO John Hall on the lame duck status of the council. Property sales were the next item on the agenda. Sale of the property on Elizabeth street was approved with conditions.
  3. Payroll and disbursements and current items on the agenda were explained to the new council.
  4. The first item was a discussion on converting an old church to senior housing.
  5. Youth sports and recreation was discussed with councillor Dube outlining his ideas for going forward.
  6. Ambulance service is still an ongoing situation in this region and no decision has been made as to the location of the new service. Both Schreiber and Terrace Bay are bidding for the new service but the final decision will be made by the City of Thunder Bay.
  7. The arena upgrades and pool repairs were also discussed and and a feasibility study will be determined. 
  8. A decision needs to be made as to who will be attending the upcoming ROMA conference. 
  9. The budget schedule will appear on the next agenda.
  10. Terrace Bay utilized and acting mayor system where every three months the meeting chair would be rotated. This will now be changed to a yearly rotation.
  11. After the agenda items are discussed the approval of all items was voted on.
  12. Communications had received a request in support for the moonlight madness event in December involving a grant in aid and possibility of providing free rental to the event.
  13. There is a request for funding for the outdoor rink that needs some improvements.
  14. There were no questions for question period and the Schreiber Media Centre was the noted attendee.
  15. A motion passed to set a date for the next council meeting in December.

Schreiber Community Media is a non profit organization established with the aim of providing media production services and training for the residents of Schreiber and surrounding areas.  Schreiber is located on the north shore of Lake Superior approximately two hours east of Thunder Bay. 

The Schreiber Media Centre is locating in the Schreiber Public Library and includes tools for  recording, live streaming and post production of audio and video.
