New Years' Babies Celebrated on Canada Day in grand style

The new years baby shower has always been a traditional community affair in Schreiber. Residents would normally gather in the Legion to bring gifts and congratulate the parents and family on their new arrival. Being a small town with a tiny population can mean the new years baby isn’t always born at the beginning of the year. Brianna Mayry and Spruce Schintz became parents of twin boys back in early January but as Brighton and Boston were born ahead of their expected arrival dates they would spend the next few months in medical care until strong enough to be sent home.

Any celebrations would have to be delayed or even cancelled as there was no available venue with the COVID 19 restrictions put in place and during a pandemic there was concern of exposing the newborns to unnecessary risk. So the Ladies Auxillary of branch 109 met up with this years new parents and decided to hold an outdoor drive by shower. Naturally it made sense to combine this with Canada day as there were no plans in place for this years celebrations. Kim Krause from Schreiber Media Centre covered the event.

Paula Kinney,  president of the Ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 109 and vice president Lisa Nesbitt organized the event with the help of the parents and their families.
Brianna is the owner of Breeze bakery, the local coffee shop in town. Tables were set up on the sidewalk in front of the shop to serve cupcakes and receive gifts. Paula and Lisa presented the proud parents with a plaque for each of the twins. Dave Hamilton, Mayor of Schreiber, welcomed the new additions to the town.

The parade kicked off with many residents having decorated their cars and joining in the drive.
People gathered across the street to observe the festivities. Cupcakes were handed out and drivers handed gifts out of the windows of their cars. Schreiber residents got to celebrate Canada day and the new years babies in grand style.
