Schreiber Council gets Updated from Director of Operations, Feb.14, 2023
At this meeting of Town Council, there was a small adjustment to the agenda this evening as the representative from MPAC was unable to reach Schreiber due to some icy winter weather. There was also an addition from the Director of Operations regarding the OCWA report. No questions were submitted for Question Period and the meeting commenced.
The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted with no outstanding business from that meeting.
The Schreiber Drinking Water report was presented and accepted. A discussion would take place later on in the meeting.
Surplus assets were the next item up, starting with the old oil furnace and storage unit that has been decommissioned when the heating system was recently upgraded.
The 2023 yearly advertising package was renewed with some slightly out of date information carrying over for this year.
The Winter carnival event schedule was accepted and the event will take place on the last week of this month.
A donation to the Beautification committee was proposed and carried pending an updated report from that group.
The purchase of air cylinders and other equipment for the fire department was finalized.
Fund transfers to and from various committees were approved.
Attendance for the NOMA convention and virtual Budget event were approved.
All debit accounts for payment and cheques issued were presented and approved and ratified.
Appointments of residents to various committees were approved for the term of this council.
Under Other business, A bylaw to adopt a new workplace violence and harassment policy was carried.
Committee of the Whole:
Director of Operations status update report always promotes discussion and this one was no different. Director Tammy Ibey is always informative about ongoing and upcoming items that fall into her portfolio. Water treatment and sewage is also overseen by the Director of operations and the latest OCWA report highlights the urgency of some needed repairs to the infrastructure. A discussion about filters at the arena was welcomed as it helped to explain why regular maintenance was so crucial. Finally new signs for the no parking zones was discussed. The issue of overnight parking on streets is vague at best and often signs are missing or damaged.
A request for Schreiber to support the Great Lakes Waterfront trail extension through a donation was discussed.
Schreiber senior centre report and minutes were discussed. A Movie Night has been proposed but in the last few years there hasn’t been a movie event in town. Also the outdoor screen is damaged and would need to be replaced. A bus trip to Thunder Bay for seniors is also on the books. Other programmes are ongoing and some new ones are in development.
Bylaw enforcement report added to the previous discussion regarding parking and fines.
Communications focussed on building bylaws and permits. A closed session will be needed to discuss the particulars of this issue.
The AMO conference schedule is being finalized with costs to be decided with respect to virtual or live attendance.
Finally a discussion ensued regarding a draft site plan bylaw amendment that will need to be implemented for future housing development.
