Terrace Bay Council Given Presentation by the Municipal Properties Assessment Corp. (MPAC)
Terrace Bay’s first council meeting for April started with a shuffle to the agenda. After accepting the minutes of the previous meeting, the next item up was a presentation by Sharla Knapton, the account manager from the Municipal Properties Assessment Corporation or MPAC.
The primary focus of this presentation was to familiarize the new council members on the role of MPAC. The presentation focussed on assessment taxation and the criteria for determining assessed value.
This assessment is used by municipalities to help determine property taxation in accordance with budget requirements. MPAC is funded primarily by fees collected from municipalities for the services they provide. A short question and answer period followed the presentation.
The next item item up would have been the OCWA report but had to be postponed at the last minute.
The CAO report was the next item and John Hall updated council on the recent property sales of vacant lots.
There was a motion to accept a new agreement for the use of the Heli pad in Terrace Bay.
The budget report recommended an increase for staff salaries of 2%.
The Public Works report focussed on equipment purchases and disposal of older assets and equipment. It is hoped that the old bulldozer, formerly used at the landfill site, will be sold.
The High School bursaries request was brought forward and accepted after a clarification of the criteria.
Profits on property sales owned by the municipality came up for discussion and will be further investigated at a later meeting.
Councillor Dube spoke about the lack of attendance by the Mill at environmental meetings in Jackfish and how water quality along the creek would need to be addressed.
All bylaws from this meeting were carried.
Then next council meeting date was approved and the meeting adjourned.

Schreiber Community Media is a non profit organization established with the aim of providing media production services and training for the residents of Schreiber and surrounding areas. Schreiber is located on the north shore of Lake Superior approximately two hours east of Thunder Bay.
The Schreiber Media Centre is locating in the Schreiber Public Library and includes tools for recording, live streaming and post production of audio and video.
