Terrace Bay Makes a List to Prioritize Minister Lobbying at ROMA Conference
Terrace Bay Council Meeting Highlights: Addressing Key Challenges and Future Opportunities
The recent Terrace Bay council meeting opened with the approval of minutes from a previous session before diving into a range of pressing topics crucial to the town’s future.
Strategic Priorities at ROMA
The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) presented a report on preparations for the upcoming Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference. Recognizing the limited opportunities to engage with provincial ministers, the town is prioritizing critical issues to maximize its allotted time. Among these concerns:
- Child Care Shortages: Despite recent mill layoffs, the availability of child care remains a significant challenge.
- Supportive Housing for Seniors: With Terrace Bay’s aging population, the need for accessible housing solutions has grown urgent. One potential avenue is repurposing the old community church into senior housing, though securing funding is pivotal for such a project.
- Mill Layoffs and Economic Recovery: Nearly a year after the mill layoffs, the town has yet to see tangible government support, leaving the community in a precarious position.
Infrastructure and Emergency Services
Infrastructure improvements are another key focus. The council emphasized the need for upgrades to municipal facilities, including the town hall, which previously served as a recreation center. Similarly, the lack of adequate medical services has become critical, with physician recruitment and emergency services personnel in short supply. This deficiency has already begun to jeopardize public health and safety in the region.
Exploring Innovative Energy Solutions
One innovative prospect discussed was the potential for Terrace Bay to serve as a pilot site for small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). Council recognized the importance of stable and affordable energy for driving industrial growth and creating opportunities along the North Shore.
Updates on Local Projects
The council also reviewed updates on ongoing projects, including:
- The sale of surplus municipal assets will soon be listed on the town’s website.
- Progress on the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) funding application to repair water and electrical systems at the local golf course.
Supporting Road Safety
Under communications, Terrace Bay endorsed a rural road safety initiative through the Good Roads Association, showcasing its commitment to improving transportation infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.
Community Engagement and Closing
During the question period, a resident commended the council for the recent Remembrance Day event, highlighting the importance of community spirit and remembrance.
The meeting concluded with the passing of all proposed bylaws, marking another step forward in addressing Terrace Bay’s challenges and opportunities.
As the town continues to navigate economic uncertainty and demographic shifts, its proactive approach to key issues—from housing and healthcare to energy and infrastructure—signals a commitment to securing a brighter future for its residents.
