A Visit to A Better Tent City: A Community-Driven Solution for Homelessness in Kitchener

In Kitchener, Ontario, an inspiring initiative known as A Better Tent City (ABTC) is offering a dignified housing solution for the homeless. Founded in 2020 by Nadine Green, Ron Doyle, and Jeff Wilmer, ABTC emerged as an alternative for those who preferred not to enter the traditional shelter system.

It initially began with Nadine turning her convenience store into a drop-in center for homeless individuals, but after being evicted, she collaborated with Doyle and Wilmer to bring the project to life at Ron's event space.

Christine Nayler, co-founder of Ryan's Hope, recently visited A Better Tent City, drawn by the success of the initiative, which started during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on her experience, Nayler emphasized the stark difference between Kitchener’s approach and the struggles faced in Barrie, where homeless encampments have been forcibly evicted, leaving residents with nowhere to go.

"I just think it's a beautiful story about how this community was built organically through committed citizens of realizing there was a better way to care for people in their community that were experiencing homelessness," said Nayler.

She highlighted the community-driven spirit of the initiative, which gives residents not only a place to call home but also a sense of purpose. "They're just meeting people where they're at and they're giving them a place to call home," Nayler explained. "They're giving them a community to belong to."
