Schreiber Council Meeting for May 2021 Highlights
The first meeting of the Schreiber council for this month took place on May 11th.
Mayor Mullins advised people to get in touch with the Health unit to check on vaccine eligibility.
Minutes of the previous meeting and special council meeting were approved and circulated.
Transfers from infrastructure reserve to cover losses on an investment with the dissolution of an experimental solar project at the treatment plant.
Approval for a resolution for the support of local fire departments.
Agreement to support Marathon regarding vaccine advocacy.
Checks issued for general accounts payable was approved and ratified after a brief explanation of what accounts are included. Payroll bank debit approved.
Committee of the whole commenced with the various department and committee reports.
The fitness centre at the recreation complex was discussed. A grant has been made available to the municipality for 75% of the budget for the upgrades to the facility, minus the renovation costs. It is conditional on the town contributing their portion or 25%.
The completion of the A6 trail improvements is nearing the finish line.
The Discovery Centre reopening was discussed and is still uncertain as COVID restrictions have made it impossible to predict an opening date. It is entirely possible that the actual grand opening will only take place next year. A possible “soft opening” (preview) might occur before then with a possible intro film being produced to highlight and promote the centre.
The idea of a Community Profile was brought forward with the hope it would create a resource for the investment consultant community and aid economic development.
Schreiber Senior Centre minutes and report was put for ward and included items such as the seed distribution for gardeners, virtual bingo and the addition of more iPads to be distributed and included amongst the library project.
The bylaw officer report mentions the spring clean up effort under way. There was a further discussion on the using of the currently empty ballpark for a dog walk area and the leashing laws that exist. It doesn’t seem to make sense to have dogs running loose in the ballpark and an alternative has been proposed.
OCWA report suggests there will be discussions going forward as to the current state of upgrades to the treatment plants for both sewage and water.
Under communications, council has agreed to put support behind the proposal of the Northern Ontario school of medicine partnership with Lakehead University due to Laurentian University financial woes. Read details here.
Delegation requests for the 2021 AMO conference were once again discussed. The elusive Minister of Infrastructure request was once again proposed but never seems to get attention.
Housing was another area that needs addressing along with waste water infrastructure improvements so it is hoped a meeting can be arranged with the appropriate ministers during the virtual AMO in June.
