Last Schreiber Council Meeting for January 2022

The last meeting for January 2022 of the Schreiber Council opened with a message from Mayor Mullins. He announced that the municipal buildings should all be opened by the end of the month pending any changes to provincial guidelines.

 

Agenda:

  • Open Session
  • The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted and carried.
  • Bill payments for repairs to the grader were approved. Total cost to be just under $120,000.
  • Motion accepted to replace the faulty heating unit at the town hall accepted. Portion of the building is currently closed due to lack of heat.
  • Payments for all accounts and debit orders for the previous month approved and ratified.
  • Advertising budget of $8000 for discovery centre is approved.
  • Appointing committee of adjustment was mentioned but no details given.
  • Emergency management programme was given final reading and enacted.
  • Memorandum of understanding between township and library was finally approved after 2 years of delays.
  • Beach use agreement and trail definitions defined and agreed upon 

Committee of the Whole

 

  • Treasure report recommendation accepted regarding the capital borrowing renewal bylaws.
  • Director of Operations report gave updates on status of equipment repairs and schedule for heater replacement. Water repairs were mentioned and the new sewer pump replacement is under way.
  • Senior programmer report mentions the ongoing struggle with supplying programmes due to restrictions and lack of heating in that portion of the building. Starting next month some online programmes will be restarted with the hope of the seniors centre reopening to follow.
  • Recreation and festivals report is focussing on Heritage days festival in the summer with the hope that restrictions are lifted. Upcoming winter carnival will also be reviewed with outdoor events confirmed and flexible arrangements due to changes.
  • Occupational health and safety minutes were presented with no discussion.

Communications

  • NOMA has requested a support for resolution of a Child daycare support programme.

Unfinished Business

  • This portion of the meeting highlighted the initial stages of preparing the budget for 2022 with emphasis on economic development.
  • Fire department and library operating costs are in preliminary stages.
  • Discovery Centre has been pushed into the spotlight as the official opening draws near and operational costs are not yet determined. This first year will outline the ongoing financial obligations to the township regarding the operation of the centre.
  • Funding will be available for an additional 3 murals to be added to the art tour project.
  • There is an outstanding balance for initial money to be paid for inclusion into the north shore community gas project, which is still not finalized and no funding has been confirmed.
  • Finally the yearly councillor appointments to various boards and committees were agreed upon with no changes going forward into the final year of this current council.

Schreiber Community Media est une organisation à but non lucratif créée dans le but de fournir des services de production médiatique et de formation aux habitants de Schreiber et des environs. Schreiber est situé sur la rive nord du lac Supérieur, à environ deux heures à l'est de Thunder Bay.

Le centre multimédia Schreiber se trouve dans la bibliothèque publique de Schreiber et comprend des outils pour l'enregistrement, la diffusion en direct et la post-production audio et vidéo.
