SDP Community Building Working Group Orientation 2022

The Regent Park Social Development Plan, also known as the SDP, is a community wide initiative aimed at fostering unity and togetherness among all the different residents and groups in the community. The Social Development Plan is built around 4 areas of priorities of the SDP. Each priority area is represented by a committee. The SDP committees are Safety, Communications, Employment and Economic Development and Community Building.
Recently the Community Building Working Group held its first orientation session of the year for new members wishing to find out more about the SDP and the activities of the Community Building Working Group. During the community building orientation session, facilitated by resident member, Walied Khogali and agency member, Joel Klassen, attendees were introduced to the members and various stakeholder groups that make up the committee. Residents were also informed about the Regent Park redevelopment and the various initiatives and activities of the group including Access to Recreation sub-committee and the Access to Space sub-committee.
The aim of the Community Building Working Group’s Access to Recreation sub-committee is to ensure that Regent Park residents have equitable access to recreation facilities in Regent Park. This committee was started in response to findings that showed that Regent Park residents were having trouble registering for swimming programs at the Pam McConnell Aquatic Centre right here in Regent Park. It was identified that most users come from postal codes outside the community preventing residents from registering for the limited spaces.
The Access to Space sub-committee explores the lack of spaces available for use by residents and grassroots groups in the community.

Aujourd'hui, le centre des arts médiatiques FOCUS sert de centre d'apprentissage communautaire pour les nouveaux médias, les arts numériques et la radiodiffusion et la télévision. Nous fournissons un établissement communautaire dédié à la formation et au mentorat des jeunes et à l'engagement des membres de la communauté de tous âges.
