Montreal Council Wants to Enhance Housing for Montrealers

What happened in the most recent executive council meeting?

More than $1 million has been put towards the maintenance of police cars for the next 24 months.

City councilors and Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante discussed housing in Montreal and the need to find permanent housing for Montrealers.

Plante wants to enhance the residential acquisition support program – the goal of this is to support the most people possible to find housing in Montreal. The priorities of this program are quality of housing, green spaces, vitality of downtown sector, and more. They said they will update citizens about their progress in the next weeks.

Plante says the city will maintain the tax rate at 2%, double the funding put towards addressing homelessness and put $ 5 million towards community organizations.

City councillor Benoit Dorais said the city has the goal of helping individuals to be able to acquire either a first residence or a better one.

$500 million was put towards the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) east transportation service, as Plante mentioned it is an essential and important to support transportation towards downtown Montreal. However, it was said that this needs more funding, about $1 billion more in funding.

As Montreal and the rest of the province is coming out of lockdown, the council announced that rules must be followed.

As of Feb 28th, working from home is no longer mandatory. However, stating that respecting sanitary rules is necessary and that vaccine passports are a must to get back to the normal ways of living. Plante invites the public to go get vaccinated.
