TriCities Community Television interviews Coquitlam City Councillor Teri Towner about her recent running challenge in the latest edition of "We've Got Issues".

Running has been a part of Teri’s life since her teens and she was recently inspired to run every street (over 1100) in Coquitlam using City Strides and Strava as her GPS running app. She started her Coquitlam run in August 2020 and completed it in March 2021. She enjoyed it so much that she then ran every street in Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra, and Port Coquitlam for a total of over 2200 kms. Running was a healthy activity that helped Teri cope with the COVID 19 pandemic.

Some of the challenges that Teri faced included less walkable streets in older neighbourhoods due to lack of sidewalks and lighting, inclement weather, and suffering a concussion and whiplash after being hit by a drone. She was impressed with the level of community spirit, including painted rocks, hearts, flags and signs she observed during her runs.

Teri suggests getting out and walking, if running isn’t an option. She is now helping other people set their own running goals and is on her way to Las Vegas to run a half-marathon. Teri is in her second term as Coquitlam City Councillor and feels that her solutions-oriented approach, community involvement and energy has helped her in this role. She feels listening and working together to understand the issues is imperative to moving ahead despite differences in opinions.

Teri’s advice to anyone considering running in the 2022 municipal election is to know why you’re running, build your support up, keep it positive and stay true to yourself.
