Cache Creek Firefighters Qualify for National Competition

A local team of volunteer fire fighters have qualified for the Fire Fit Nationals in Spruce Meadows in September. Last week, members of the Cache Creek Fire Department participated in an intense competition. The Fire Fit Championships took place in Calgary, Alberta and was an opportunity for firefighters to see their progress in the physical challenges they face while fighting fires, training and rescues. Three firefighters from Cache Creek attended — Alana Peters, Al Wiens, and Tom Moe. Before they headed off to Calgary, Valley News Channel caught up with the team to discuss the event, and their training.”

Volunteer Firefighter, Alana Peters said to Valley TV News in a interview, “This competition is interesting because at the regional level there's no difference between professional fire departments in volunteer fire department so we're competing against professional firefighters who you know get to train for their jobs whereas like i have a desk job so all of my training has to be done on my own time and like these guys too we're out here as a team at least once a week and then doing our own things and then.”

The team competed in multiple events at the fire fit challenge regionals in Alberta from June 17th to the 18th. The team trained on their regular fire practice on Tuesdays evenings.”

The Cache Creek Fire Chief, Tom Moe said, “three of us are doing the individual and all four of us last do the relay we did the fire fit three years ago in 2019 and we came in second place out of three teams but we were pretty impressed with our performance air so we've been training pre-covid for this.”

The team were trained by Nash Wiens wife to Al Wiens she says she’s known the crew members her whole life and has her own fitness journey and wanted to help out, she went on to say she loves the process of training and pushing the team members. The fire fighters went on to qualify for the nationals despite the training challenges they faced.”

“It's hard for us to train for because one of the first the first part of it is a run up a six story tower and we don't have any buildings that tall at all here.” Said Peters. “So that's something you see we've got our little stepper sizers thing from my mom over there that we're practicing our step up so on and trying to get ready for that so it's a lot of lot of leg strength a lot of like explosive fitness and so it's very different for us to train for.”

Alana Peters placed first in the women’s division with Al Wiens placing 9th in the men’s over 40 category and Tom Moe placing third in the men over 55 categories. Alana says she will continue on to fire fit worlds & Canadian national champions in spruce meadows, Alberta from September 7th – September 11th.
