Terrace Bay celebrates 75 years of History
In August of 2022 the town of Terrace Bay will be 75 years old. To help celebrate, organizers Gary Adduono and Emily Joubert contacted Kim Krause from the Schreiber Media Centre to produce a series of interviews, highlighting the stories of local residents who would relate their stories of growing up and the changes that had happened over the years. Terrace Bay was originally conceived as a designed community with shopping centres and new built homes.
During its 75 years, there have been many changes which the residents who participated in the filming would describe. The original concept was to run a series of individual interviews on a large screen in the town hall during the anniversary festival. It was thought that maybe a shorter version contain bits of all the interviews would be more fitting as watching over 2 hours of material might not suit the venue.
The special edition would tell the story of Terrace Bay through the eyes of residents who were either born and raised in the area or chose to live there at a later date. Seniors were first approached and many came forward to take part in the taping. One younger resident , Bobby Spadoni, would also feature as his involvement in sports, especially hockey, had a huge impact on community building. The oldest participant was Carol Hansen, a teacher during her life in Terrace Bay. Carol told of the ups and downs that had been faced in the schools due to the mill closures and how education has evolved. Annie Forbes was also a student and eventually would take on the role of organizing curling events, especially for the women of the town. Mary Clara Papineau was born and raised in Terrace and would eventually become active in municipal politics holding a position as councillor for many years. Rick St. Louis was also a lifetime resident of the town and also served on council during the rebranding and refurbishing of the downtown centre. Finally Mayor Jody Davis, who was actually born in Schreiber, talked about his role as mayor and how proud he was of being able to steer the town in a new direction where tourism will be the future of the area. With the opening of the new pavilion and waterfront attraction, it seems that Terrace Bay has once again faced its past challenges with a new energy and optimism.
