Premier John Horgan announces funding for second school on Burke Mountain
Amid growing concerns about lack of amenities for the ever growing population in the Burke Mountain region, Premier John Horgan announced on August 30th that the Province of BC has given the green light to the construction of a new middle - secondary school to be built in lower Hyde Creek Village.
The Province has already invested $52.3 million to build a new Sheffield Elementary school. This school will have space for 430 students, part of the 1,035 new student spaces funded by the Province in less than four years throughout the district. This week the newly built Irvine Elementary school in Port Coquitlam will be opening it's doors to over 500 students. This $26.7 million dollar project includes a daycare facility. The new funding announcement is for $135 million to build a facility that will support a further 1,000 students with the potential of being expanded to include more students in the future.
School district 43 has committed a further $25 million toward the project and the City of Coquitlam has already committed adjacent land to be developed into a turf field and track. At the moment this project is scheduled to be completed and ready to serve our community by 2026. John Horgan is stepping down as premier of British Columbia,
Regarding his status as Premier, Horgan will remain as premier for the time being and says he has asked the president of the B.C. NDP to work with the party's governing body to select a date in the fall for a leadership convention.
