Memorial service for Queen in Port Hawksbury

STRAIT AREA – A federally-applied carbon tax is not the proper way to encourage Nova Scotians and the province's industries to reduce their carbon footprint, maintained Inverness County MLA Allan MacMaster, also Deputy Premier and Finance Minister for Nova Scotia, in an interview with Telile’s Adam Cooke.

MacMaster defended the course of action that led to his PC government submitting a green-energy proposal to Ottawa with only days to go before a September 1 deadline, with Premier Tim Houston and Natural Resources and Renewables Minister Tim Halman branding the provincial strategy as "Better than a carbon tax."

Federal officials quickly rejected the move, and gasoline and diesel prices are slated to rise by 14 cents per litre this January as a result.

Speaking to TELILE 24/7 host Adam Cooke as part of the series' 100th episode, MacMaster claimed that the province’s finance department has worked diligently on this file with MacMaster and his cabinet colleagues, and blamed the federal government for forcing unnecessary hardships on people who are already struggling with high gasoline prices.
