All Candidates Meeting 2022

Presented by New Westminster's Chamber of Commerce, candidates for the position of Mayor of New Westminster as well as those looking for positions on City Council have an opportunity to answer some questions and present their platforms to the public. 

The civic election will be held on Saturday October 15, 2022.

The people running for Mayor include:

Ken Armstrong, (New Westminster Progressives). is a lawyer who has lived in NewWest since 2002 and in Queensborough since 2008. He has been active in the community as a volunteer for several sports organizations. 

Patrick Johnstone (Community First New West) was first elected to City Council in 2014. His top priorities include maintaining affordable housing and rental stock, especially for working families. 

Chuck Puchmayer was first elected to city council in 1996 and has also served as an NDP MLA in the BC Legislature. His top priorities include safe clean streets, climate change and the provision of safe, affordable housing.

12 candidates are running for the 6 seats on City Council. They include (in alphabetic order) :

Daniel Ampong emigrated to NewWest from Ghana in 1994, and has been a resident here since.He owns a business here, and his prioriities include keeping NewWest streets safe and clean, improving the city's infrastructure, and bring diversity to City Hall. 

Karima Budhwani has a background in the law and Environmental studies.  Her priorities include improving city infrastructure, engaging with residents of NewWest and planning for the future. 

Ruby Campbell has a background in Inter-governmental relations and community relations and has been a long-time volunteer in NewWest.  Her priorities include: housing affordability and  enhancing public engagement.

Chino Das, an incumbent with city Council, has a PhD in urban planning from UBC, and has lived in NewWest since 1989. Her priorities include: housing for seniors and for immigrants, enhancing infrastructure and building a healthy, inclusive city. 

Rick Folka, (New West Progressives) was born and raised in NewWest. He is a CA, and has held senior management positions with local healthcare organizations.  His priorities include providing improved and timely information to residents, improving the city's infrastructure and encouraging increased business from commuters.

Daniel Fontaine, (New West Progressives) has lived in NewWest for over 20 years. awarded the Queen's Jubilee medal for Public service in 2012. His priorities include Housing affordability, Crime and Safety, and lack of green space and public facilities.

Tasha Henderson (Community First New West) has a background in city planning and as a parent. Her priorities include: Housing security, availability of daycare, and economic development.

Bereket Kabede (Community First New West) was born and raised in Ethiopia, and is now a resident of Queensborough with his wife and children. His priorities include increasing public transit in NewWest and expanding partnerships with under-represented voices. 

Jiayi Li-McCarthy was not present at this meeting. 

Jaimie McEvoy (incumbent) was not present at this meeting.

Paul Minhas has lived in NewWest Ince 1991 and was owner of the Heritage Grill from 2005. His priorities include Crime and safety, Infrastructure management and transportation.

Nadine Nakagawa (Community First New West) (incumbent) is seeking a second term on city council. Her priorities include the climate crisis, housing, and increasing community connections.
