Carl Trepanier, candidate for Coquitlam City Council joins Patrick McCarthy of TriCities Community Television. Carl has resided in Coquitlam for six years, is a business owner and is connected with the Coquitlam Sharks swim club. Being a Dad who is present to his kids is a high priority. Carl has served for nine years on the Sports and Recreation committee in Coquitlam. His experience with the city and in supporting events planning inspired him to run for City Council. Coquitlam is a well-run city, but the shortage of family Doctors concerns him. He feels the City could build medical clinics to attract more Doctors into the community. On growth and housing, Carl supports density, but would encourage building smaller, more affordable units. Coquitlam is a popular area in the region. He is in favour of keeping a solid core of single-family homes. He is supportive of below market housing and ‘rent to own’ opportunities. Walk off (or mini) suites around North Road and in proximity to Simon Fraser University would offer further housing options. The Province is responsible and will present the solutions for many of our current housing issues. Carl was happy to see Coquitlam develop an Environmental Sustainability Plan. However, he was alarmed about the targets and timelines, and thinks they are unrealistic. Cities have limited authority and jurisdiction over climate action. We are failing to achieve the targets we have already set. E-bikes could be a great equalizer, and we should lay the groundwork for solar power. Cities have a responsibility to lead by example and educate people. Agricultural land retention is important. Carl recognizes the cost pressures of recreation facilities and the need for Coquitlam to build more amenities.
