Callan Morrison for Port Moody City Council - 2022 Municipal Elections
Port Moody City Council candidate Callan Morrison joins We’ve Got Issues interviewer, Nancy Furness. Callan has lived in Port Moody for 23 years, has a Political Science degree from SFU, bought his first home in Port Moody and is a small business owner. He served on eight committees including Arts and Culture, Parks and Recreation, and Advisory Design Panel and Community Planning over six years. Callan was inspired to run for Council as he feels there have been missed opportunities due to Council not working together. Callan says small businesses such as those in Newport and Suterbrook Villages are the heart of the community; providing gathering spaces, vibrant communities, walkability, and employment. Businesses in Moody Centre have an uncertain future as Landlords can terminate agreements with notice so they can redevelop their property. Top priorities include park expansion and protection, providing more housing for seniors, young people, and families, and having a collaborative, efficient, and positive Council. Rocky Point Park and Bert Flynn Park are very busy for at least a few days a month. Other parks are not being used to their full potential. Upgraded amenities would allow residents to enjoy multi-use parks in their own neighbourhoods (e.g., the pop-up park at Kyle Centre). More park options are needed for dog owners. Parks are important for mental and physical health. Callan says the City needs to consult with residents and experts and work with community builders regarding the future of Kyle Centre. Higher density developments offer opportunities to provide affordable housing, daycare, and amenities. Residents should be consulted regarding the amenities they want. Callan says walls of towers would never happen in Port Moody, but some towers are needed to help get benefits for the community including keeping park spaces. Complete neighbourhood plans with a variety of housing options are needed and clarity is needed in the Official Community Plan (OCP). Active transportation including cycling, e-bikes, scooters, and walking should be enhanced to reduce car traffic. Efficient light timing would help traffic to move. Callan started engaging people by holding up a sign in Suterbrook saying “Let’s talk”. People expressed concerns about traffic, smart development and growth, and services. Callan would like to see more people visit Port Moody by transit. He supports seeing Art in every part of the City.
