Steve Kim, candidate for Coquitlam City Council talks to Judith Castillo (TCCTV). Steve believes service to community is important. He has lived in Coquitlam since 1981. Volunteering led him to seek elected office which he holds in high regard. Steve takes a balanced approach to council work and has a collaborative style. He is proud of his record supporting an affordable housing strategy, the Environmental Sustainability Plan, the City’s childcare strategy, efforts toward reconciliation, and work on inclusion and diversity. On the housing file, he wants to create more options for residents, and concentrate growth and density around sky-train stations. He supports an increase in active transportation options and believes we need to get people out of their cars. Supporting EV charging stations and supporting local entrepreneurs with green technology is important. Ensuring there are adequate childcare spaces is important in drawing families into the city. Steve is proud of the City’s multiculturalism and wants to see continued support of celebrations and opportunities for various community groups to make the city vibrant. Steve works hard to listen and build bridges and now that he understands City processes he hopes to continue to build consensus around the council table in term two. Steve put his business on the back-burner in the first term to make Council a priority. He believes time on Council has deepened his understanding of the needs of small businesses. He is especially proud of his volunteering to deliver meals to seniors and feels especially during COVID it helped alleviate the isolation of seniors and helped him learn that community spirit is strong. Steve wants to fine-tune the City’s work to provide housing options including supportive housing. Mental health is an issue that he wants to continue to support in the city while ensuring the community feels safe for everyone. He supports the car 67 type model where health support staff attend calls with first responders using a health-centered approach. Steve played minor baseball, volleyball, tennis and golf and has recently taken up running. Steve considers himself a movie buff and enjoys hiking, walking and cooking his parents’ traditional recipes. He is proud that his parents opened the first Korean restaurant in Vancouver. Steve encourages people to get out and vote and take part in the democratic process.
