City of Coquitlam Councillor Teri Towner Reflects on International Women's Day
Judith Castillo, Tri-Cities Mosaic Host interviewed the City of Coquitlam councillor Teri Towner about the celebration of International Women's Day put on by TriCities Chamber of Commerce. They talked extensively about women in our society today and the work to be done to create a better future.
Castillo acknowledged her role as Coquitlam city councillor has been in helping newcomers to settle in their new home, and in advocating for all members of our society to be equal without discrimination base on race, colour, sexual orientation and gender.
Towner says that she is a proud mom of two grown kids who learned and practiced these values every day and she feels privileged as woman to be a Canadian citizen protected under the law and The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
According to Towner, Canada is a global leader in human rights an as Canadians, she says we applaud Iranian girls who are protesting the injustice of the Iranian regime being against women "Women. Life .Freedom," are words that echo in Teri's ears - she recently attended an Iranian New Years celebration, Nowruz.
Councillor Teri Towner finished the Interview saying; "I tell anybody. Build your team build your support, overcome and identify any barriers that you are in, what you want to pursue and start knocking down those barriers one at a time."
About Councillor Teri Towner: Teri has lived in Coquitlam for 20 years and is thrilled to be raising her active teens, Jessica and Christopher, in this 'beautiful' city. Teri has a business degree from SFU and worked for 10 years in retail banking, 16 years with a major BC utility in various human resources management and analyst positions and she spent .one year as a Special Events Officer for a local non-profit organization. Teri has always been involved in a wide variety of community initiatives. Some examples: Teri currently serves on the Board of Directors for Community Volunteer Connections and recently, she was appointed to serve on the Habitat for Humanity Family Partnering Committee.
