Decoding Racism: Discussions with Farsi community in Vancouver
This program explores the distinction between systemic racism and racism within multiculturalism.
Poran Poregbal and Samira Gholami, organizers of a seminar, aimed to clarify the distinctions between systemic racism and racism. They began with a land acknowledgement to honour the indigenous community. Poran acknowledged the significance of the land we all share.
Both speakers discussed the involvement of the BC government in addressing systemic racism and racism, with a mission to educate, especially within the Iranian community. They focused on multiculturalism and anti-racism, where Samira talked about how the system affects employment and relationships. She compared Canada and Iran, highlighting why understanding multiculturalism in a diverse society matters.
Young advocates took the stage, starting with 7-year-old Ava, who read that everyone should respect each other no matter where they came from and what they look like. Next, 8-year-old Daryio said I think we can learn to be anti-racist by finding out about other cultures and by listening to others and speaking out. The kids received gifts and certificates as a token of appreciation.
Samira also touched on youth leadership and early adolescence, the phase between childhood and adulthood.
In conclusion, journalist Sherry Soltani interviewed the audience, who praised Canada's multiculturalism and the government's efforts to raise awareness and educate against racism. Sherry also spoke to Poran and Samira about the Middle Peace Society's mission and educational programs for the Iranian community, as well as their youth leadership initiatives.
