Terrace Bay Looking to Improve White Goods Refrigerants Disposal
Terrace Bay council convened for their first meeting of October. After the land acknowledgement the agenda for this meeting was approved, the minutes of the previous meeting were approved as submitted.
The first presentation introduced the new Terrace Bay Public School principal, Amy Buchan, to council. She was requesting a partnership with council to help involve youth in local politics and the inner workings of a municipality.
CAO John Hall then presented council with the strategic plan update. He is hopeful that the update will show that Terrace Bay is on track to complete upcoming projects and that the town has a solid plan moving forward into the next few years.
The Lake Superior High School has requested a meeting with council to try and hash out the logistics of introducing students to the workings of the township. Zoey Krause was recently appointed student trustee on the Superior Greenstone District School Board and will be working with council.
The disposal of home appliances, especially in regards to refrigerants, was discussed. Costs associated with disposal have to be considered and landfill sites have already put strict regulations in place with regard to how that material is disposed of in a safer manner. A fee is being considered which will help to centralize the decommissioning of those appliances. Some of these materials have been dumped along empty roads and in wilderness areas and this incentive may help curb that practice.
Special projects coordinator, Stacy Moffat gave an update on surplus goods. The disposal of goods comes from a recent inventory study where surplus goods were identified and will be put up for sale as is.
Under Communications, the town of Marathon has requested a letter of support to enhance education programs with regard to the mining industry.
Question period had no submissions.
The meeting was then moved to in camera for discussion of confidential matters.
