Finding Work in British Columbia: Immigrant Experiences and Perspectives
Imagine stepping into life in British Columbia as an immigrant—finding a job that matches your education and skills can be a huge challenge.
Sometimes, even after putting in years of hard work, immigrants struggle to land the job of their dreams. What's the main issue? Many immigrants point fingers at the government, saying it doesn't easily accept their educational qualifications.
In today's discussion about jobs for new immigrants, Skyrise Media has two special guests: Mr. Soheil Gorji, who manages ITD Canada College in Vancouver, and Ms. Farnaz Hosseinzadeh, an English teacher. Soheil shares that when he arrived in Canada, knowing English helped him quickly become a part of the community and find the job he wanted. On the flip side, Farnaz, who's been in Canada for just two years, thinks that not being fluent in English is a big roadblock for immigrants trying to get the job they want.
Both guests tell their own stories and agree on one thing—it's not all about the government. Immigrants need to take the lead, learn the language fast, and, of course, find the job they want as quickly as possible. It's all about immigrants' determination and need to fit into the community by learning the language, making it a must-do for finding the right job in the shortest time.
Now, there's a new development. The government of British Columbia is working on a law to make the process of assessing immigrants' qualifications more accurate, faster, and fairer.
Upcoming legislation will outline new responsibilities for professional regulatory bodies under several themes:
• Accountability: Regulators will be accountable to the government and the public for protecting public health, safety and the environment by using inclusive and fair processes that enable all qualified applicants to get certified.
• Fairness: Applicants will be treated equitably and fairly, without prejudice.
• Transparency: Regulators will give applicants all the necessary information to understand how to get certified.
• Efficiency: Applicants will get the information they need to get professional certification quickly and without unnecessary delays.
