Seedlings and Skateparks

Life on Gabriola TV brings you excerpts from the most recent meeting of the island's Parks and Open Spaces Advisory Committee (a committee of the Regional District of Nanaimo).

Note: The video is taken from the Regional District of Nanaimo’s webstream. We have boosted the audio, but the quality is still poor, so we recommend watching with closed captions turned on. We have edited them for accuracy.

00:00:10: Intro to video and two of Gabriola's parks.
00:02:17: Rollo McClay Park: Seeding of upper field and effects of dry summer on tree-planting.
00:04:00: Huxley Park: Plans for new tennis building, which will also be used by other groups.
00:09:48: Skate Park repair.
00:18:15: Skate Park “etiquette” signage.
00:23:41: New speed zone update.

Key insights
🌳
The planting of dozens of tree seedlings on the perimeters of the park was discussed. An unprecedented drought has left questions as to how many will survive.

The availability of the tennis courts during the construction work is uncertain, but once a certain amount of work is done, at least one court could remain open.
🎾
The proposal includes separate rooms in the shed for tennis and other sport park groups, allowing for shared space and locked storage.
🛹
Some people using the Skate Park are worried about the impact of cold weather freeze-thaw on the park's condition. Repairs are already needed.
📢
The skate park contractor is planning to come out this fall to fix the existing cracks and address the warranty work, but finding a dry spell might be tricky.
🚧
The committee is cautious about creating signage that may prioritize experienced skaters over beginners, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and avoiding any implied hierarchy at the skate park.
🚸
The proposed extended reduced speed zone aims to address the safety concerns of children being active around the school before dawn and after dusk in the height of winter.
