Fifty Thousand Montrealers Gather in Support of Palestine
Pro-Palestine activists blocked and painted the entrances of CBC Montreal's offices.
Activists say that numerous mainstream media outlets, including CBC news, are manufacturing consent. This refers to when media only provides a certain type of narrative to allow policies to be accepted by citizens. Since October 7, many media outlets have focused on Israel's right to defend itself, while not giving the same space for discussing Israel's violations of international law to the same extend.
When asked to provide a comment, Chuck Thompson Head of Public Affairs for CBC News said, “Over the last four weeks, CBC News has been on the ground providing continuous coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. We have documented in explicit detail all that has transpired. Our objective is to ensure Canadians receive fair and balanced coverage of this tragic and challenging story.”
Activists also called out CTV – which offices are located across the street from CBC, and also called out TVA and the Montreal Gazette.
“[Media] upholds and they follow U.S. empire, the Canadian government and Israel lobby,” said journalist Yves Engler.
Engler called out the Montreal Gazette, who he said published an article titled, "How Hamas uses hospitals as shields during war". CUTV could not find an article with this title by the Montreal Gazette, but instead found an article titled, "Hamas hoarding more than half a million litres of fuel under Gaza hospital: IDF". In an email from Engler, he confirmed that this was the article he was discussing from the Gazette and they had changed the title of the article.
The Gazette did not respond to a request for comment from CUTV. A similar article published by the National Post, which owns the Montreal Gazette, used the title, "How Hamas uses hospitals as shields during war".
