Supporting Individuals with Autism Involves Understanding and Embracing Their Unique Needs

Continuing the previous program on autism and assistance in the province of BC, we continued our conversation with Mrs. Poran Poregbal and Samira Gholami.

Initially, the question is raised on how someone would know whether they have autism or not, and what the first step is once they have that information. Samira mentions that identifying autism in adults is more challenging than in children. Several key signs help identify autism in adults.

Poran then discusses the role of families in dealing with a member with autism. She notes that sometimes, for cultural and religious reasons, parents of autistic children condemn their behaviour as impolite and shy, forcing them to conform to social norms.

Samira talks about how Canadian schools handle children with autism, emphasizing the importance of understanding and correctly interpreting their different behaviors, as they may be mistakenly seen as shy.

Poran further discusses the role of society, work environments, and even the issue of marriage for individuals with autism. She mentions that autistic individuals may prefer solitude but can navigate their surroundings well.

Samira points out that many people with autism may not understand jokes and humour. Poran adds that many families may be reluctant to believe that their children have autism, but she emphasizes the need for psychological counselling for therapeutic interventions.

Poran encourages viewers to visit the Autism BC website for comprehensive and valuable information. Majid mentions that during his research, he discovered a fifty-page booklet in Persian provided by the BC government that can be helpful for families seeking government assistance.

In response to a question about interacting with individuals with autism, Poran advises against unnecessary physical contact, as they may not like being touched or held. She emphasizes the importance of understanding their issues.

Poran recommends watching the movie "Rain Man," where one of the characters, played by Dustin Hoffman, has autism, and the film revolves around the subject.

In conclusion, Poran and Samira respond to viewer questions raised in the previous program.
