Islands Trust Local Trust Committee Meeting on Gabriola Island Considers Walks, Water, and Indigenous Cultural Heritage Sites

Life on Gabriola TV brings you excerpts from Islands Trust Local Trust Committee meeting held on Gabriola Island, Oct. 26, 2023.

Note: The video is taken from the LTC's webstream. We have boosted the audio, but the quality is sometimes still poor, so we recommend watching with closed captions turned on. We have edited them for accuracy.

Topics include:
01:43: The Gabriola Health and Well-Being Study, also encompassing Mudge and DeCourcy Islands.
03:12: The Master Parks Trails and Recreation Plan meeting, hosted by the Regional District of Nanaimo, which Trustee Susan Yates attended. Discussion included the need for a village-to-ferry trail on Gabriola, accessibility concerns raised regarding the Village Way Path, and plans to replace a portion of the surface of the village trail with asphalt, which Yates says is environmentally unsound.
07:25: Adjudication outcome against the Islands Trust regarding violation notices for Summer Rain's water business. Bylaw Compliance and Enforcement Manager Warren Dingman reports on a hearing regarding violation notices issued by the Islands Trust to Summer Rain, which were cancelled by the adjudicator. He discusses next steps with the Trustees, and suggests the Islands Trust may wish to do a judicial review,
13:25: A motion, presented by Trustee Tobi Elliott, to request "Guidance and Direction from the Provincial and Federal Governments with Regards to the Protection of Indigenous Cultural Heritage on Gabriola Island." She notes that, "We are continually being put in these positions where we can't dictate to land owners how to care for Indigenous cultural heritage, [so] how can they step in to support a better process while we wait for legislation which could take 10 years to change."
