Critiquing the landscape of Canadian media

Harbinger Media invites you to the inaugural Soapbox Series, "News Suck, We Know," featuring a live panel discussion with prominent podcast hosts: Rob Rousseau of 49th Parahell, Nashwa Lina Khan of Habibti Please, and Paris Marx of Tech Won’t Save Us. In this dynamic event, the trio delves deep into Canada’s media landscape, addressing pivotal topics starting with Andrew Chang's coverage of the Israel-Gaza War on About That.

Rousseau points out the rather silly juxtaposition of the seemingly positive web-series title with the horrifying images tied to the subject. Rousseau elaborates on how he found the segment jarring with news media handling its coverage unfairly, Next, with a clip from Power Play with Vassy Kapelos, panellists break down how Canadian news media easily present a bias concerning the war. Various Israeli representatives were given a platform to speak while Palestinian representatives were not only limited in their screen time but met with scoffs from interviewers. Finally, the trio commented on the recent invitation of a Russian Veteran to the Parliament. Initially invited to honouring him, it was later revealed he served as a Nazi veteran.

Nashwa Lina Khan serves as a community educator, facilitator, researcher, published writer and poet. Her work, exploring installation and narrative methodologies, has been published in Vice, Rewire, This Magazine, and The New York Times. Nashwa also hosts and produces podcast projects Muslim Rumspringa and Habibti Please.

Rob Rousseau, an independent journalist and political commentator, takes centre stage with his podcasts 49th Parahell and The Insurgents. Additionally, he engages audiences through his daily livestream TRRS on Twitch.tv, while his written contributions can be found in VICE, Paste Magazine, Canadian Dimension and The Maple.

Paris Marx, the Canadian tech writer and podcast host of Tech Won't Save Us, showcases his insightful perspective on the pitfalls of Silicon Valley. Author of "Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong about the Future of Transportation," Paris's work has been featured in Time, Wired, CBC News, and more.
