Footprints in a New Land

Loneliness and social isolation are a critical civic concern with profound impacts on both the physical and psychological well-being of individuals, as extensively documented in existing scientific literature. However, within newcomer communities, discussions regarding these issues and effective coping strategies remain relatively underexplored. The importance of the topic to the Iranian community for newcomers lies in fostering a smoother transition and integration into a new cultural context.

Recognizing this gap, Sherry Soltani, Poran Poregbal, and Samira Gholami, the hosts and facilitators of a recent seminar held at the West Vancouver Community Centre, took the initiative to delve into the complexities of loneliness and isolation, sharing valuable insights and experiences on breaking the cycle. This interactive seminar, organized through the collaborative efforts of two non-profit societies, namely the Sky Rise Media Society and the Middle Peace provided a dynamic platform for the audience to engage in discussions about stress management and healthy coping styles.

Following Poran's warm welcome, Sherry detailed the agenda for the seminar, setting the stage for audience involvement. Samira then delved into the crucial topic of isolation and the challenges faced by newcomers, providing valuable insights and perspectives. The participants actively explored various aspects, including cultural adaptations, community integration, and interactive communication styles within the Canadian context.

Poran shared "We'll explore how newcomers can navigate the nuances of a new culture, build connections within the community, and establish a sense of belonging. She added, "Your thoughts and experiences on this topic are valuable, so let's engage in an open and enriching discussion."

The seminar fostered a sense of community engagement and participation, encouraging attendees to pose questions and share their personal stories. The overarching goal of the program was to cultivate connections, establish an in-person communication platform, and highlight diverse and creative methods for getting involved in Canadian communities, particularly in Vancouver, BC.

Samira, addressing the audience's concerns about stress and isolation, said "Stress and isolation are common, especially in new environments. Try mindfulness for stress and build a support network through community involvement." She added, "Remember, many share similar experiences, and seeking connection is a valuable step in overcoming these challenges."

A member of the audience, having recently moved to Canada, shared feelings of loneliness and uncertainty. Sherry welcomed her warmly, assuring them that she is not alone. Sherry suggested joining organizations for volunteer work to make friends and learn English. Poran echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of active involvement in the community to foster a sense of belonging and home.

Several audience members shared personal stories, detailing their strategies for coping and thriving within the community, aiming to lead more fulfilling lives. The audience's participation in this seminar was remarkable and positive.

In essence, the workshop served as a valuable opportunity to not only listen to the experiences of community members but also actively engage with them in a meaningful dialogue. By focusing on stress management in the context of isolation and loneliness, the seminar aimed to contribute to the overall well-being of individuals in the community and promote a sense of belonging and connection in Vancouver, BC.
