Toronto's Regent Park Planning Committee Meeting 15 feb 2024

In a recent Planning Committee meeting held on February 15, 2024, stakeholders engaged in dynamic discussions and strategic planning initiatives aimed at bolstering community engagement and driving change within the SDP Stakeholders Table.

The meeting commenced with a 15-minute discussion led by Aba and Jeff, who presented a survey draft designed to gauge the demand for in-person meetings and related factors such as childminding, food, locations, and timing. Ismail suggested amendments to include questions about deterrents of locations, while Gail proposed streamlining the survey to focus specifically on reasons for non-attendance at planning committee meetings. The conclusion reached was for Aba and Jeff to revise the survey and present it again.

A dialogue ensued regarding the possibility of changing the timing of evening meetings to accommodate SDP members until April 4th. Various suggestions were considered, including changing meeting times to 3pm or exploring alternate evening days. It was decided that Ismail would reach out to residents to solicit opinions on suitable meeting times.

The topic of resident engagement and outreach took centre stage. Strategies for engaging residents, including inviting them to join SDP and participate in activities, were deliberated upon. Proposed engagement locations included TCHC buildings, community centres, and grocery stores, with Miguel raising concerns about reaching residents in condominiums due to high turnover. The conclusion was for Ismail to refine the engagement strategy and present it again.

During the discussion on recognition, Walied proposed recognizing members at meetings and creating a nomination form for recipients. Gail cautioned about potential feelings of exclusion among former members who had contributed but were no longer part of SDP. Walied agreed to develop a draft process for recognition and present it to the planning committee.

The location of SDP Stakeholder Table meetings was deliberated upon, focusing on securing suitable venues including community centres and event rooms. Concerns were raised about technical issues and internet availability at certain venues. It was decided that Ismail would consult with Deany about location options and report back to the planning committee.

In announcements, Gail shared details about an entrepreneurship strategy project, including a learning series and a cafe project operating Monday to Friday, with plans for a bricks-and-mortar location.
