The seventh annual Innisfil Seedy Saturday event was held at the Innisfil ideaLab & Library on March 23. It featured vendors, exhibitors, expert talks, children's activities, and projects aimed at promoting gardening and welcoming spring. Bridget Indelicato, the founder of the Innisfil Seed Library, stated that the event focuses on connecting people with nature.

Indelicato said the seed library facilitates learning about various plants, suitable for beginners to advanced gardeners, emphasizing community engagement and sustainability. This initiative is part of a larger Canadian movement that began in 1991 in Vancouver, focusing on seed swapping and education. The event is celebrated across Canada, offering educational opportunities and fostering a deeper connection with nature.  

Leanne LeBlanc from Wild Birds Unlimited discussed offerings aimed at attracting birds to backyards, including specific feeders and foods for different bird species, along with solutions for deterring squirrels and supporting pollinators. She highlighted the importance of native plants and provides various bird-friendly products, underscoring the role of creating a conducive environment for birds and bees alike.  

Andrew Roy from Gardenalchemyseeds.ca emphasized the importance of cultivating calorie-dense and protein-rich foods for self-sufficiency. His company offers a variety of seed potatoes and other staple crops that are essential for a sustainable garden.

The event's broader purpose was to promote food security, environmental sustainability, and community involvement in gardening and wildlife conservation, reflecting a growing interest in self-sufficiency and a deeper connection with the earth.
