Coquitlam, BC - Coquitlam Heritage at Mackin House made history on Thursday, March 28, 2024, by hosting its inaugural Nowruz Celebration. This event marked a significant milestone for Coquitlam Heritage, showcasing a vibrant tapestry of cultural exchange and community engagement.

The Nowruz Celebration, held from 7 pm to 9 pm, immersed attendees in the traditions and festivities of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Guests enjoyed a lively evening filled with food, music, and heartfelt conversation, centered around shared memories and experiences of Nowruz celebrations.

A standout feature of the event was the meticulously curated Haft-Sin table by Leila Varasteh, renowned for her design of the first official Haft-Sin table at the Parliament Building in Victoria. Varasteh's involvement added prestige and authenticity to the celebration at Mackin House.

Organizers expressed gratitude to the community for its support and enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of celebrating cultural heritage and nurturing connections among neighbourhood community members. The event underscored Coquitlam Heritage's dedication to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and cultural appreciation.

The program commenced with a piano performance by Nazanin Mir-Mohammadi, followed by Leila Varasteh sharing her insights on cultural traditions and the significance of preserving them. Farhad Soofi, a member of Coquitlam Heritage, discussed his efforts to bring the event to the museum, encouraging greater community involvement among Iranian residents.

Bita Rezai, the program's host, acknowledged city council member Brent Asmundson's support and elaborated on the Nowruz celebrations' historical and cultural significance. Leila Varasteh delved into the symbolism of the Haft-Sin table, emphasizing its universal appeal beyond Iranian culture.

Naghmeh Esfahani captivated the audience with enchanting songs like "Gol Omad Bahar Omad, Shab Bod Biaban Bod," fostering a sense of unity among attendees. Bita Rezai highlighted the importance of cultural traditions like Nowruz in shaping children's identities and fostering community cohesion.

The evening also featured a traditional dance performance to the tune of "Gol-e Sangam" and heartfelt poetry recitations by Iraj Sarshar and Azadeh, adding depth and cultural richness to the celebration.

The resounding success of the Nowruz Celebration showcased Coquitlam's diverse cultural landscape and provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and mutual understanding. Coquitlam Heritage looks forward to hosting more events that celebrate the community's rich diversity and heritage.
