Ramadan and Community Engagement: Educational Insights by Imam at Break-A-Fast Event and Mosque Tour
In an event aimed at fostering community spirit and promoting interfaith dialogue, on Saturday the Maryam Mosque welcomed visitors from various backgrounds to explore the mosque's facilities and participate in a series of educational activities designed to dispel myths surrounding Islam.
At the beginning of the event at the Maryam Mosque, Missionary Imam Shahrukh Abid gave the presentation on the significance of Ramadan. Imam Abid emphasized the role of fasting during Ramadan in developing self-discipline, patience, and empathy for the less fortunate. The conclusion of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr, a festival celebrating the end of fasting, emphasizing charity, community feasting, and remembering the less fortunate.
Ihtisham Ahmed, Organizer, of Break-A-Fast with a Muslim, provided a tour, highlighting the mosque's architectural and functional aspects, including the prayer hall, library, and gym, which doubles as an event space.
Ahmed clarified misconceptions about Islam, emphasizing the peaceful essence of the religion and the true meaning of Jihad, which is described as a personal, spiritual struggle towards self-improvement and not a call to physical conflict. This initiative is part of the mosque's ongoing efforts to build bridges with other faith communities, combat Islamophobia, and foster a more inclusive society.
In addition to educational discussions, the mosque hosted a dinner to break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan, offering guests a chance to experience the practice of fasting from sunrise to sunset. This ritual, aimed at developing empathy and gratitude, was shared with guests to provide insight into the discipline and reflection that characterizes Ramadan.
