In the depths of winter, Angela Vos made a choice to swap the comfort of her home for the biting cold outside Hamilton City Hall. What began as a solitary protest quickly evolved into a significant encampment. Angela’s goal was clear: to urge city officials to convert a city-owned parking lot into affordable housing.

“Being there for one month with all these people, and seeing everything, I had a really hard time walking away knowing that the community needed so much," she told Deepak Bidwai, Local Journalism Reporter for Simcoe Community Media.

"What happens when people just walk by us? Is that okay? That we just don't recognize that people are ill and walk away."

Despite the harsh weather and initial indifference from city councilors, her persistence paid off when Mayor Andrea Horwath employed her mayoral powers to push through the necessary changes, a move sparked by Angela's relentless advocacy.

However, this victory was shadowed by controversy. On April 4, Angela faced arrest under allegations of assaulting a bylaw officer, a claim she vehemently denies. The timing and basis of these charges have sparked further debate about the treatment of those who challenge the status quo and advocate for the vulnerable. Angela’s ordeal is emblematic of a larger, often unseen struggle faced by many in urban centers across Canada and the world. She said the harsh realities of life on the streets combined with bureaucratic hurdles highlight the ongoing challenges in addressing urban homelessness and the affordable housing crisis.

Through her actions, Angela not only seeks to change policy but also to awaken a communal consciousness towards the homeless, urging society to see the humanity in every individual facing such hardships. As the city of Hamilton moves forward with its affordable housing project, Angela’s story remains a poignant reminder of the personal cost of advocacy and the deep-seated issues that still demand resolution.  

"I'm just actively letting people know what we did at City Hall and the changes that I believe that it made. We also have an event outside of the courthouse on May 2, to adhere to the fact that I've done nothing wrong and should not be charged for it," Vos said.
