Councillor Expresses Concerns over Mill Road Emergency Access in Terrace Bay, ON.
The Terrace Bay Logo has been refreshed this year, and the meeting agenda now provides a quick overview of meeting content. The meeting began with a land acknowledgement and the disclosure of interest, followed by approval of the previous meeting's minutes.
John Hall presented the CAO report, detailing updates on projects and the near-finalized budget, which includes repairs to the cultural centre and town garage. A special council meeting to finalize the budget will occur soon. The golf course will open shortly, with remaining repairs prioritized due to its role in attracting visitors and businesses.
At the ROMA conference, attention was drawn to the Mill closure's impact. The council plans to address this issue at the upcoming NOMA conference in Thunder Bay. The Chief Building Official position is up for renewal, with the council preferring to maintain the current building inspector agreement.
A new recycling bylaw takes effect on July 1st, with both Schreiber and Terrace Bay using the same recycling service provider. Regular garbage pickup remains separate. The public works report indicated the landfill site will need replacement in 13-15 years, prompting monitoring and future expansion planning.
The spring clean residential pickup is scheduled for May 18th. Rising costs may end the free service after this year, but Councillor Johnson advocated for its continuation to ensure proper disposal of household goods. Fee structures and acceptable materials were discussed due to past instances of improper dumping.
The community development supervisor reported on the upcoming cruise ship season, highlighting economic opportunities from increased tourism. Cruise passengers will have access to the golf club and town centre shuttles, generating revenue from harbour stops.
A proclamation for HOPE Air Day was accepted, and all arising bylaws were passed.
The Mayor updated the mill closure situation, noting the removal of some equipment but no official announcement from AV Terrace Bay. Discussion included the maintenance of the mill road, an emergency access route, and concerns over provincial funding previously paid to AV Terrace Bay for road maintenance. Councillor Dube raised the issue of the road's potential disrepair.
No questions were raised during Question Period, and the meeting moved in-camera to discuss private matters.
