New Westminster City Council Discusses Transportation Plan for Queensborough
At the forefront of the discussion was the proposal to improve bus shelters and benches throughout the Queensborough residential area. The council reviewed a detailed plan that includes the installation of new, weather-resistant bus shelters. Additionally, the plan proposes the placement of more benches along bus routes to provide resting spots for passengers. Mayor Patrick Johnstone noted that many locals had gotten in the habit of placing plastic chairs and privately purchased umbrellas at bus stops.
Councillor Ruby Campbell emphasized the significance of these amenities for residents. "We have a lot of seniors and a lot of youth, and I am really glad that we have identified this, and I am hoping that we can move the benches forward and the protection."
In addition, as Queensborough transitions from rural to residential, the need for more sidewalks was discussed. This is not as simple as just building a new sidewalk. Engineering staff were on hand to explain the complexities of changing from open water ditches to sidewalks with covered sewer lines on an island.
City staff also answered questions from the council regarding data showing an increase in public transit use in Queensborough over the past year. The council discussed the urgency of these improvements. The plan aims to cater to current demand and anticipate future growth as the area continues to develop.
The staff looks to finalize the plan with this input from the council and begin the public consultation soon after on Be Heard New West City. Full details and updates can be found at www.beheardnewwest.ca/queensborough-transportation-plan.
