Alex Bell on the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge
Alex Bell, the founder of the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge, has created an event that brings the Tri-Cities community together in an inspiring celebration of fitness and diversity. The Challenge, which started in 2010, has grown into a significant local event, drawing participants of all ages and abilities to take on the iconic Coquitlam Crunch trail.
Bell was inspired to start the Diversity Challenge as a way to promote inclusivity and physical activity within the community. "The Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge is all about bringing people together, regardless of their background or fitness level, to enjoy the outdoors and challenge themselves," Bell explains.
The event offers a variety of categories to cater to different interests and fitness levels. Participants can choose from the Stair Master challenge, an 8km run, the Make It or Break It category, and a Recreational category. "We wanted to create something for everyone," says Bell. "Whether you're a competitive athlete or just looking for a fun way to stay active, there's a place for you in the Challenge."
The Stair Master challenge is a highlight of the event. Competitors race up the Coquitlam Crunch's steepest section, testing their speed and stamina. "It's an exhilarating experience," Bell notes. "Participants push their limits, and the sense of accomplishment at the top is incredible."
For those looking for a longer challenge, the 8km run offers a scenic route through the Crunch trail. "Participants can expect a mix of terrain and a supportive atmosphere," says Bell. "The run is scheduled for early September, making it a perfect way to enjoy the end of summer."
The Make It or Break It category is designed for those seeking a true test of endurance. "Athletes complete as many ascents and descents of the Crunch as possible within a set time," Bell explains. "It's grueling but incredibly rewarding."
In the Recreational category, the main goal is participation and enjoyment. "We encourage everyone to join, regardless of fitness level," says Bell. "It's all about having fun and staying active."
Awards are given to various age groups for both the Stair Master and Make It or Break It challenges. "We recognize top performers in different age brackets to ensure fair competition," Bell adds.
Since its inception, the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge has evolved significantly. "We've grown from a small local event to one that attracts participants from across the region," says Bell. "It's become a staple for Tri-Cities residents."
The Diversity Initiative Fund, supported by the Challenge, has profoundly impacted the community. Grants from the fund have been used to support local projects that promote inclusivity and diversity. "It's heartening to see the positive changes brought about by these initiatives," Bell remarks.
Looking ahead, Bell hopes to expand the reach and impact of the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge. "We aim to continue growing, involving more people and supporting more community projects," he says. "Our goal is to create a lasting legacy of inclusivity and fitness in the Tri-Cities."
